Mestre Paulo Batuta: A Life Devoted to Capoeira

Mestre Paulo Batuta began his Capoeira journey in 1985 in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Training under Master Milton and later Master Cicero, he became deeply rooted in the traditions of Cordão de Ouro, one of the most respected Capoeira lineages. In 1997, Paulo arrived in San Diego to study English, but Capoeira quickly became his true calling. His passion and leadership naturally placed him at the center of a growing Capoeira community, leading him to leave his career as an economist in Brazil to dedicate his life to teaching this powerful art form.

In 1999, he officially established Capoeira Mandinga San Diego, now Capoeira de Valor San Diego, offering classes for all ages and skill levels. Reconnecting with his roots, Mestre Paulo reunited with Mestre Cicero in 2020, reinforcing his school’s commitment to the deep traditions of Capoeira. His name, "Batuta", was given by Mestre Marcelo "Caveirinha", recognizing his energy, charisma, and leadership—a name that means "cool guy" and also refers to a conductor, a maestro of movement, music, and culture.

Mestre Paulo’s impact extends beyond San Diego. He has helped expand Capoeira worldwide, establishing schools in Las Vegas and Guam, and teaching at UCSD and SDSU. His passion for sharing Brazilian culture led him to create Planet Brazil, a performing arts group, and produce the Brazilian Day San Diego Festival, a celebration that brought thousands together to experience the vibrant music, dance, and traditions of Brazil. He travels regularly, giving workshops and inspiring Capoeiristas worldwide.

For Mestre Paulo, Capoeira is more than a martial art—it is a tool for transformation. Through Capoeira, students gain strength, confidence, discipline, and lifelong friendships. It fosters cultural exchange, self-expression, and a positive mindset. As he puts it, "Capoeira helps us become better citizens." His mission is to continue spreading the joy, movement, and music of Capoeira, building a community that thrives on respect, resilience, and connection. Come train, play, and be part of this incredible journey! Axé!
